Selling semiconductor and electronics manufacturing records
Updated October 2026 · listmydata team
Process recipes, yield data and failure-analysis reports are some of the rarest technical records there are. Two things decide what you can sell: who owns the files (often the customer, in contract manufacturing) and whether US export controls apply to the technology.
What buyers want
- Recipes, process parameters and change logs
- Yield, failure-analysis and characterization reports
- Equipment maintenance logs and engineering change records
- Engineers' notes and email about fixing problems
A 2025 NIST workshop report on AI in chip manufacturing found that "training data from similar operations at different factories led to more robust modeling" (NIST). Records from smaller manufacturers could help fill that gap. AI data companies also pay process engineers to turn recipes and results into structured data. See expert gigs in engineering.
Check before you sell
- Customer-owned files: contract manufacturing agreements commonly say manufacturing files stay the customer's exclusive property and keep customer information confidential for years. Aerospace and defense supplier terms say the same about buyer drawings and technical data. Only list your own process knowledge, or get written permission.
- Export controls: some technical data is controlled under US export rules (the EAR, or ITAR for defense articles). Sharing controlled technology with a foreign national, even inside the US, can count as an export and may need a license (US Commerce Department). Check how your technology is classified and ask buyers where the data will go and who will see it.
- Your own trade secrets: leave out what you want to keep, and license the rest under terms that limit use and resale.
Getting your data out
- ERP and MES systems: most can export reports to spreadsheets. Cetec ERP, for example, keeps past files under "My Exports."
- Fab yield and analysis tools: exports vary by vendor and contract. Check your license terms, since some vendor tools limit exporting.
- Lab notes and reports: PDFs and scans are fine.
General information, not legal or export-compliance advice. If any of your technology could be controlled, get export-compliance advice before you list it.
