Selling law firm records
Updated October 2026 · listmydata team
Legal records are among the most wanted by AI companies, and the most restricted. Client files and communications can't be shared without each client's informed consent. Your firm's own forms, procedures and know-how are a different matter.
What buyers want
- Templates, form banks and checklists, with all client details removed
- Internal procedures: intake, conflict checks, filing and docketing workflows
- Training material, practice guides and research memos on general points of law, with nothing that identifies a client
- Records of how matters are staffed, timed and managed, with client names removed
Business Insider reported law as one of the fields buyers want most, and OpenAI's 2025 test of AI on real jobs includes lawyers. One AI data company advertises $100 to $150 an hour for licensed lawyers to write and grade legal problems. If that interests you, see expert gigs in legal.
Check before you sell
- Client confidentiality: under ABA Model Rule 1.6 and the matching rule in your state, a lawyer may not reveal information about a client's matter without informed consent, apart from narrow exceptions. That covers client files, correspondence and much of your email.
- AI and client data: ABA Formal Opinion 512 (2024) says a lawyer needs a client's informed consent before putting client information into AI tools that learn from it, and that boilerplate in an engagement letter isn't enough. Selling client data for AI training raises the same concern.
- Closing or selling a practice: state rules on selling a law practice and on keeping client files still apply. Talk to your state bar's ethics hotline before you list anything that came from client work.
Getting your data out
- Clio Manage: admins can export matters, contacts, time entries, notes and communications as spreadsheet-ready CSV files from the Exports page. (Clio)
- PracticePanther: export options on each list, with Excel and "All" for complete contact and matter files. (PracticePanther)
- iManage Work: bulk download for documents. (iManage)
Export for your own review first. Then decide, with ethics advice, what can be licensed.
General information, not legal advice. Your state's rules of professional conduct control.
