Selling accounting and bookkeeping firm records
Updated October 2026 · listmydata team
Accounting is one of the fields AI companies most want to learn. Your firm's own procedures, templates and work history can be valuable. Client information needs the client's consent first, and client tax returns need signed, written consent under federal law.
What buyers want
- Month-end close checklists, workpaper and engagement templates, review notes
- Internal email and chat where staff work through real problems
- Workflow and scheduling records that show how work moves through the firm
- Your firm's own books
- Training material for new staff
The demand is real. Business Insider reported accounting as one of the fields buyers want most. OpenAI's 2025 test of AI on real jobs includes accountants and auditors, and one AI data company advertises $60 to $180 an hour for controllers who write problems drawn from their own past work. Check before you sell
- Client tax returns: federal law (IRC section 7216) makes it a crime for a tax preparer to disclose or use tax return information without the client's advance, signed consent. Leave tax returns and tax-prep files out unless every client has signed. Even anonymous statistics built from tax returns can't be sold, except as part of selling the practice.
- Other client information: the AICPA's confidentiality rule bars members from disclosing confidential client information without the client's specific consent. Remove client names and anything that could identify a client, and ask your state board or a lawyer if you're unsure.
- Your firm's own material (procedures, templates, training, your own books) is usually yours to license.
Getting your data out
- QuickBooks Online: Settings, then Tools, then Export data. It downloads reports and lists as Excel files in one zip. (Intuit)
- QuickBooks Desktop: File, then Utilities, then Export, for lists. (Intuit)
- TaxDome: exports accounts, jobs, tasks, invoices and time entries as CSV files. (TaxDome)
- Outlook or Gmail: see How to remove personal information for exporting and cleaning email.
Retiring or selling your practice? Records of how your firm worked may be worth something on their own. Start with how to sell your company's data.
