Selling your startup's Slack, email and Jira after shutting down

Updated October 2026 · listmydata team

A closing startup's Slack, email, code and project tools have sold to AI companies for $10,000 to several hundred thousand dollars. Before you sell, export everything while your subscriptions are still active, check who gets the money, and protect your former team's privacy.

What buyers want from startups

Context adds value. Code plus the tickets and threads explaining why it was built that way is worth more than code alone. See What company data is worth for reported prices.

Check these before you sell

  1. Who gets the money. MIT Technology Review reported that proceeds usually go to senior creditors and investors, not employees. Talk to your board, investors and whoever is handling the wind-down first.
  2. Your team's privacy. Old Slack and email hold private conversations. A privacy lawyer writing in October 2026 noted that messages about pay and working conditions may be protected under federal labor law, and that promises in your privacy policy or handbook still bind you. Leave out HR and payroll files, health and benefits information, and private direct messages (DMs) unless people agree.
  3. California and other state privacy laws. California's privacy law applies to larger businesses and to businesses that make half or more of their revenue from selling or sharing personal information. If it applies, selling employee or customer information counts as a "sale" unless the data is properly de-identified. See How to remove personal information.
  4. Customer contracts. Many contracts and data agreements forbid sharing customer data. Remove it, or leave it out.
  5. Samples count too. A sample you send a buyer is already a disclosure. Remove personal information first and get a confidentiality agreement signed.

Exporting your data

Export everything before you cancel any subscription. Several tools only let you export while you're on a paid plan, and export links expire.

ToolWho can exportWhat to know
Slack, Free and ProWorkspace owners and adminsPublic channels only. Slack rejects requests for private channels and DMs unless you show legal process, members' consent, or a legal requirement. Free plans keep file links for 90 days.
Slack, Business+Workspace ownersCan apply to export all channels and DMs. Slack expects employment agreements and policies that allow it.
Slack, EnterpriseOrg owners, through Slack supportExports by member or workspace.
Google WorkspaceSuper adminsUse the Data Export tool. Needs an active subscription, takes 2 to 14 days, and the export is deleted after 60 days.
Microsoft 365Admins with eDiscovery rights (E3 or E5)Exports mailboxes as PST files (Outlook's archive format). Download packages expire after 14 days.
Jira and ConfluenceSite adminsUse the site backup. Download links expire after 14 days (Jira) or 7 days (Confluence).
GitHubOrganization ownersA mirror clone keeps full history. Migration archives are deleted after 7 days and leave some things out.

One more thing to check: Slack's API terms, updated in 2025, forbid using data pulled through Slack's API to train AI models. Ask the buyer how they'll use Slack data and get it in writing.

In order

  1. Export everything while subscriptions are active, and keep a secure copy.
  2. Decide what to leave out: HR files, DMs without consent, customer data you can't share.
  3. Remove personal information. See How to remove personal information.
  4. List it free or get help selling. Owners always post free.
  5. Get offers in writing and take your time. See Got a 48-hour offer?
  6. Sign a license that limits use and resale, and get paid before full delivery.
